Fitness & bodybuilding: DISGUSTING: AT&T Asks CA Wildfire Victims If They Remembered To Pick Up Satellite Rec

602| Fri, 28 Mar 2008 04:03:00 GMT| halfcenturian| Comments (29)

When this Azola couple got back from their honeymoon, they had about an hour of matrimonial bliss before being forced to flee as their house was engulfed in flames. So you can understand they had some things on their mind other than the status of their AT&T | Dish receiver as they ran for their lives. When they called to cancel service, the customer service rep asked if they had "remembered to pick up the receiver" as they left the house...
After the couple said no, AT&T told them they would have to pay $300 for the receiver and would not put any forbearance on the bill as the couple tried to get their life back together. Escalating to a supervisor yielded the same result. You would think AT&T would allow for some extenuating circumstances CONSIDERING THE WHOLE PLACE IS ON FIRE OF FEDERAL EMERGENCY PROPORTIONS! Still, AT&T has a right to recoup it's property... which makes us wonder if the couple's homeowner's insurance will cover it, as the receiver isn't actually theirs. Just an unfortunate situation all around.

In contrast, Washington Mutual is refunding overdrafts and ATM surcharge fees to wildfire victims.

I think AT&T should have at least delayed the bill until the insurance came through. But if homeowners are going to build in areas threatened by fire, they should be prepared to be responsible for any losses caused by the fire. On NPR they were talking about how construction in these areas is irresponsible because you build the house and live in it, regardless of the risk - but when the fire comes, firefighters who warned you not to build there have to risk their lives for your ass.

Of course, I'm not saying that I don't feel sorry for them. They've lost their homes and nobody deserves that. But it is unreasonable of them to expect to pass their losses onto AT&T. It would be like me losing my house and then expecting a random miscer to pay for the damages out of 'compassion'.

I'm sure if it were just a single house fire the company would act exactly the same. There's no difference given because half the damn state is on fire, or else you'd be seeing videos of some couple in Mississippi who just got from their honeymoon, and their home burned down but they weren't given an exception in having to pay for the receiver.

everyone knows that you grab your wallet, photos and your dish reciever in case of fire

stuck686 | Fri, 28 Mar 2008 04:19:00 GMT |

Where are they going to mail the bill too? I would tell them when I get the bill I will pay it.

i mean, jeez, if theres a fire, and your running from your house, you cant take the dish reciever, just chalk it up as a loss

you signed the contract!!

feel bad that you cant pay att there money right away

let your credit go down 7 points over a reciever

but dont go and act like its att responsibilty to feel sympathy

AT&T does suck, my dad works for them, and the crap they do is ridiculous. If it weren't for injustice like this I'd be amazed they turn a profit, everything is so backwards and inefficient its stupid.

Corporations are composed of people

I'd assume HomeOwners insurance would cover this perhaps and any other liabilities in the house?

UPDATE

AT&T Won't Charge Couple For Leaving Satellite Receiver Behind In Flaming House

azolahouse.jpgAT&T wrote in to say they won't be charging the family whose house burned down in the California wildfires for the satellite dish they left behind when fleeing for the lives

"This customer initially called AT&T to discuss other communications services. After she was transferred to Dish, the disaster policy Dish has in place was not followed. This customer will not be charged for service cancellation or equipment fees--that is our policy, and the policy of Dish, in times of natural disasters. We have spoken with this customer to clarify our policy, and we are committed to taking care of all customers affected by the fires."

Sooo true : (

mysteriousfiend | Fri, 28 Mar 2008 04:32:00 GMT |

There is nothing wrong with ATT.

Thats like saying "oh you are sick, then medicine and surgery should be free". Why dont you tell the hospitals to not charge for their services?

I mean, charge the bill to cancer, or some virus.
